Optoisolators enable electrical isolation between a signal source and the device which is controlled. The main function of optoisolators is to protect sensitive electronic circuits from electrical disturbances in the environment. Optoisolators are designed to be used in harsh environments where exposure to lightning, electrical noise, or high energy electrical pulses plays significant role. One method of isolating electronic circuits from each other is to use optoisolators. The APT1221 is a type of optoisolator - Triac, SCR Output.

The APT1221 optoisolator converts an input voltage to an output current that is used to drive a TRIAC or SCR power switching device. This optoisolator features high isolation voltage, high input-output coupling capacitance, and high temperature range performance (up to 150°C) in an SO-8 package. It also meets the requirements of safety standards: UL 3044, UL 1577, CSA C22.2, and TÜV VDE 0884.

The APT1221 optoisolator has a maximum isolation voltage of 6kV, high peak LED current of up to 200mA, and a maximum peak output current of 820mA. The optoisolator operates on an input voltage of 3V-5.5V, with a typical forward current of 10mA and a forward voltage drop of 1.3V. The LED forward voltage range is typically 1.2V-1.8V. The device offers a high degree of isolation with a minimum of 100MOhm of off-state resistance. The output current transfer ratio is also adjustable, giving users the ability to control the output current to achieve the desired switch-on/off time.

In terms of working principle, when the LED of the APT1221 optoisolator is energized by the input voltage, a small current (typically 10mA) flows through the LED. This current produces photons that cause the photoconductive cell to become conductive and activate the thyristor output. When the LED current is interrupted, the thyristor output is deactivated and the circuit isolates the input and output, preventing any further connection. This ensures that the input and output will be isolated, eliminating the possibility of short circuits or power surges.

The APT1221 has a wide range of applications in fields such as industrial automation, domestic appliances, motor control, professional audio, and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning). It is mainly used for Phase Control and can be used to control the speed, torque, and direction of a motor. The optoisolator can also be used for soft-start switching and dimming the intensity of lighting. It is also suitable for controlling the temperatures of heating appliances.
