IntroductionOptoisolators - Triac, SCR Output are a special type of optoelectronic device that employ an infrared LED and a solid state detector circuit in order to isolate electrical circuits from one another. The optoisolators are designated with an identifying letter combination derived from the type of output devices used, such as Triac, SCR Output, or SCR Output, Triacs, Diacs, and Zener Diodes. The APT1221W is an optoisolator with Trac, SCR Output and falls within this category.The APT1221W optoisolator is a small 4-pin device which offers 3000 Vrms Minimum isolation and fast switching. It is designed for mounting on industrial or consumer products needing reliable AC/DC isolation. The package is housed in a silicone encapsulated package with through-hole pin mounting.ApplicationsAPT1221W optoisolators are very popular in a variety of industrial and consumer applications. The devices are commonly found in medical equipment, process control systems, lighting fixtures, automated industrial machinery, HVAC systems, and appliances. The optoisolator serves to provide a low impedance, isolated load connection in a variety of high voltage, low voltage or medium voltage AC/DC conversion circuits.The optoisolator is also found in a variety of other applications where providing an electrical connection between two devices without compromising electrical isolation between them is necessary. Examples include surge protection circuits, power factor correction (PFC) circuits, remote triggering of switching supplies, and switching motor operations. It can also be used in safety circuits to protect against over voltage, over current, and leakage current as well as in numerous other applications.Working PrincipleThe APT1221W optoisolator operates by using light to separately activate two electrical contacts. The LED portion of the device converts a signal sent by the system over the electrical input connection into light which is then detected by the output photo-detector.The photo-detector consists of a semiconductor device such as a Triac, SCR Output which turns on when exposed to sufficient light energy. This allows a current to flow through the output connection which can then be used to fire a triac or activate a motor, depending on the application.The APT1221W optoisolator provides 3000 Vrms minimum isolation, with a dielectric strength of 5kV, and a minimum response time of 4.9 microseconds. It also provides a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to 85°C.
