Optoisolators are devices used in electronics to electrically isolate two separate circuits. They are also referred to as optocouplers, photocouplers, and opto-isolators. An optoisolator is typically composed of one or more optically coupled semiconductors, such as a LED and a phototransistor, in a single package, allowing electrical current to pass from one circuit to the other only when the light from the LED is detected by the phototransistor. This not only prevents interference between the two circuits, but also prevents hazardous AC voltages from passing between them.

The APT1222 optoisolator, part of the APT series from Advanced Photonix, is an optoisolator with triac, SCR, and diac output. It is designed for high-current, AC/DC switching applications and provides galvanic isolation to protect the input and output signals. This device has a ‘full wave’ version with two optically coupled gallium arsenide (GaAs) LEDs, a triac output, and a photocoupler, and a ‘half wave’ version with one LED, a SCR output, and a diac output.

The APT1222’s triac, SCR, and diac outputs are designed to be used in a variety of applications, including lighting control, motor speed control, and current and voltage sensing.
