Optoisolators are an important type of integrated circuit that are used to isolate circuits from each other. Optoisolators are composed of a light-emitting diode (LED) coupled to a photodetector. In this instance, the optoisolator of focus is the APT1232, which is a Triac and SCR Output type optoisolator. While Triac and SCR Output optoisolators are very similar in their application fields and working principles, they do differ in two distinct ways. The two types of optoisolators are examined below.
Application Field
The APT1232, like all other optoisolators in the Triac and SCR Output family, are designed to provide galvanic isolation between the input and the output circuit. The isolator allows a signal, power, or data to pass between the two isolated circuits without requiring them to touch, or even be near each other. Therefore, the optoisolator creates what is known as an “electrical insulation barrier”. This barrier ensures better security, reliability, and performance than in circuits joined directly.
This isolation is especially important for medical, industrial, automotive, and communication applications. For instance, medical applications benefit from the APT1232 due to its ability to separate circuits while reducing electromechanical interference. Industrial applications may see improved safety and reliability, thanks to the isolation provided by the optoisolator. In automotive applications, it is important to be able to power multiple systems independently, as this greatly reduces the risk associated with breakage of aggregates. Communications applications require constant data transmission with low noise. As such, proper isolation is necessary in order to ensure high performance levels. The APT1232 is designed to provide this level of isolation for the aforementioned types of applications.
Working Principle
The APT1232 incorporates a Triac and an SCR (Thyristor) in a single-package optocoupler. It contains a light emitting diode (LED) that is the input stage and is made up of a silicon phototransistor in the output stage. The optical emission from the LED is then received by an integrated photodetector, which controls the thyristor.
The galvanic isolation is achieved by limiting the amount of electrical energy between the input and output circuits. To accomplish this, the optoisolator is designed to operate in an open-loop configuration, with a voltage-controlled LED and a current-controlled phototransistor at the input and output, respectively. Simply put, the LED voltage converts the output current of the phototransistor. The isolation is further strengthened by the transformational barriers in the semiconductor portion of the optoisolator.
The APT1232 also provides the flexibility of a wide operating voltage range. It supports operating voltages from five to sixteen volts, providing the application with great operational flexibility. Additionally, the optoisolator offers an exponential current transfer ratio, and no mutual interference between circuits. This makes it ideal for a wide range of industrial, automotive, medical, and communication applications.
In summary, the APT1232 is a Triac and SCR Output type optoisolator that offers galvanic insulation between input and output circuits. This optoisolator is designed for use in a variety of applications, due to its wide range of operating voltages and exponential current transfer ratio as well as its ability to provide high levels of isolation while eliminating mutual interference.
