An insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is a semiconductor device consisting of two power transistors mounted back to back. This type of transistor has three terminals, the collector (C), the gate (G) and the emitter (E). It works by combining two different devices: a p-type MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor) and a pnp bipolar junction transistor (BJT) to form a hybrid device. The combination of these two devices allows for the transistor to operate with higher switching speeds, higher efficiency and better temperature stability.

The FGPF50N30TTU is a 600V, 50A, IGBT module from Fairchild Semiconductor. The FGPF50N30TTU offers very low conduction losses and diode reverse recovery time. It has a rated static drain-source on-state resistance of 0.027 ohms and a maximum transistor safe operating area (SOA) of 80%. It also features a built-in thermistor to protect the module from over-temperature.
