PMIC - Power Distribution Switches, Load Drivers are an integral part of embedded and portable device functional block. Generally speaking, these components are used for controlling electrical power distribution circuits and providing surge protection / a driving ramp for voltage and current requirements during device activation or shut off. The IPS031R is one among the many power distribution and regulation products that is available in the market. This article gives an overview of the application field and working principle of IPS031R.

IPS031R is a dual output load driver that has robust characteristics and related features. It is advantageous in providing excellent performance and reduced power consumption in a range of portable and embedded devices. This device consists of 2 single output drivers, each with a peak current limit of 1A, an adjustable soft start, and an adjustable activator threshold. The two drivers can run independently, increasing the range of applications in which IPS031R can be used. The IPS031R provides advanced features like an adjustable soft start circuit and an adjustable charge pump for activation and a signal for driver enable/disable.

The typical applications of IPS031R includes Point of Load (PoL) applications such as and Power Management Units, graphics and audio control systems, battery chargers, power entry backplanes and active clip regulation, Smart Display (eg. LCD and LED backlighting), automotive controllers, communications and Networking. This device is a better power management and regulation option since, it can keep the load current steady irrespective of variations in the battery voltage. This eliminates the need for external active power management components, making it an ideal option for PoL applications.

The working principle of IPS031R is quite simple. This device is composed of four basic components, namely a charge pump, charge pump control logic, a driver and an output driver. The charge pump section of this device is designed to provide a 1A regulated current source and a soft start feature that helps in circuit stabilization when the device is not switched on. The charge pump control logic will enable the expansion of the load branch with each switch that is controlled by IPS031R. The driver of IPS031R is designed to interface with several peripheral oscillators, bridges and PHS-controlled devices, while the output driver can drive the load power requirements in Voltage mode or current mode.
