IR21844 is a kind of 3-phase gate driver, which is produced by Infineon Technologies. It is regarded as a PMIC - Gate Drivers product. The chip was intentionally designed to be used in applications such as power inverter, electric motor and motion control, welding, compressor and so on. With its low RDSon output stage, wide Vmm range and wide SOA, it can reach up to 5A output peak current.

The IR21844 is used as a controller to operate three-phase motor or high power bridge circuits. It provides improved pulse width modulation (PWM) modulator performance and reliability to many motor or high power circuit applications. It is especially applied in high temperature resistance and high accuracy motor drives.

The performance of the IR21844 is enhanced by the additional levels of protection. It is equipped with a thermal shutdown (TSD), an under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and the simple external power MOSFET protection. These features provide a robust protection to the gate driver.

The IR21844 circuit design provides constant current µC output on-time with guaranteed minimum and falling output impedance as the temperature increase. In addition to this, the IR21844 also offers an integral current limiting circuit to ensure only limited current is delivered to the gate of the external MOSFET.

Generally, the working principle of the IR21844 PMIC - Gate Drivers is based on the PWM (pulse width modulation) signal. In this system, a microprocessor receives the PWM signal, calculates the on-time of individual output, switches on a MOSFET driver device, and then delivers the current to the gate of the external power MOSFET. The current is then converted into voltage by the MOSFET, in order to change the conduction angle of the three-phase motor or high power bridge.

Finally, the IR21844 can provide a wide input voltage range of 6V to 25V and an adjustable frequency range of 2500kHz to 10000kHz. It also has an on-time adjustment range from 7.5ns to 55ns, supplying pulse rise/fall time of 4ns/7ns to 15ns/22ns @ 8V VDD and 80°C junction temperature.
