IRDC3839 is an Evaluation Boards - DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS from Infineon Technologies. It is a SWiSHSM phase-shedder based PFC reference design for the wide input voltage range of 90 V-264 VAC. This reference design is a state-of-the-art design, which utilizes a high frequency isolated LLC full-bridge based DC/DC (also known as a bridgeless PFC converter) topology and is compliant with the pending energy efficiency regulations.
The IRDC3839 reference design is used in medium power applications such as TVs, monitors, game consoles, audio equipment and other consumer electronics. The primary application goal is to reduce system power consumption while still maintaining a high power factor and high efficiency. It features 1.2 MHz (typ) operating frequency with an input voltage range of 90 VAC -264 VAC and output power of up to 80W. The reference design also features simple design with a 15 parts count and the 23mm height, 2 layer PCB design for a compact design. The IRDC3839 reference design also includes the added flexibility of an adjustable output voltage range of 7 V-15 V.
In order to achieve the desired efficiency in the IRDC3839 reference design, the LLC converter is used in the primary stage of the design. This topology has been becoming more and more popular for high efficiency, high power factor, and high power applications (due to a soft switching and high frequency characteristics). The LLC converter uses a combination of the resonant current source and a full bridge inverter. The LLC converter also improves the converter’s turn-on speed, increases the converters efficiency, and provides good line/load regulation characteristics.
In the secondary stage of the design, a flyback converter is used to provide a regulated isolated output voltage. The flyback converter is the optimal topology to isolate the output voltage from the input voltage rail. The use of a flyback converter is also beneficial in decreasing the component count, which increases the reliability of the design. The combination of the LLC and flyback converters provides a current mode control with soft switching power conversion, providing a good power factor and high efficiency.
The IRDC3839 reference design also includes several features to aid the design engineers. The reference design features protection from over current, overload, and overvoltage to help protect the system from damage. The IRDC3839 also includes a Buried Zener Diode (BZD) to provide the immune of any type of electrical overstress on the output of the design. Furthermore, the reference design also includes current measurement capability based on built-in current sense resistors and ADC output.
The IRDC3839 is a complete, ready to use primary and secondary stage solutions for efficient off-line power supplies designs. It offers the design engineer a compact design with high efficiency and good power factor. This makes the IRDC3839 an ideal solution for a variety of applications that require a high efficiency, high power factor off-line power supply.
