IRDC3842W is a wide range application evaluation board from Power Integrations. It can be used for DC/DC, AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS applications. This board provides a very convenient way for designers to evaluate the stability reliability and application performance of the IRDC3842W chip.

The IRDC3842W evaluation board mainly consists of three parts. A 3-phase bridge rectifier is used as the input filter and as the input for the Boost Power Stage, a power inductor is used for boosting the input voltage and the integrated IRDC3842W as the control IC. The evaluation board is based on a Multi-phase interleaved Convertor. It not only makes the Boost Power Stage more efficient but also reduces the amount of component search and design work.

The board also includes an optional bleed current limiter, a power MOSFET, an output rectifier, a second power inductor and a voltage-doubler. The optional bleed current limiter increases the system safety by drawing a constant current in case of an overvoltage. It also prevents the output voltage from rising dangerously high.

The evaluation board operates in two main modes: a \'run\' mode and a \'standby’ mode. In the run mode, the evaluation board samples the input voltage at a frequency of 800 kHz and then uses a closed loop control LT1292 to regulate the output voltage. In the \'standby’ mode, only the input voltage is monitored. If the input voltage drops below a certain threshold, the evaluation board shuts off the main stage and draws only a minimal quiescent current.

The IRDC3842W evaluation board features Synchronous Rectification, which allows for faster switch times and an enhanced system efficiency. The additional features include a startup capability, soft start, pre-biased output capability, Power Factor Correction and a variety of current limit and protection protection features such as OCP and OV.
