IRG4BC20S, also known as a Gate threshold voltage segmented insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), is a single-stage power switching device. The working principle behind the IRG4BC20S is based on the use of an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) shell and a set of body diodes. The IGBT shell consists of two parallel sections, an emitter and a collector. By applying a positive or negative voltage to the gate of the IGBT, current can be allowed to flow between the emitter and the collector, thus controlling the current flow.

The body diodes are placed strategically on either side of the IGBT shell, allowing the current to flow in both directions. When a positive voltage is applied to the IGBT, the body diode on the negative (ground) side is reverse biased and effectively turned off, allowing current to flow from the emitter to the collector. Conversely, when a negative voltage is applied to the IGBT, the body diode on the positive side is reverse biased and thus turned off, allowing current to flow from the collector to the emitter.

It can switch up to 2.3 A at a gate-emitter voltage range of 13-18V.
