The LM5160DNTBKEVM is an evaluation board designed to demonstrate and evaluate the functionality of the LM5160 synchronous buck controller from Texas Instruments. The LM5160 synchronous buck controller integrates all the features that are necessary to implement a synchronous buck Voltage/Current Mode DC-DC power supply.
The LM5160DNTBKEVM offers a complete test solution with the exception of certain external components, such as a rectifier bridge, inductor and capacitors. It includes two sets of EVM heatsinks to support an output power level of up to 24W and two voltage divider sets to accurately measure input voltage, output voltage, and output current. Apart from these, the EVM also includes an LCD display to display programming and operational feedback, an EEPROM to store program data, an adjustable resistor to set slew rate on the ADJ pin, and a temperature sensor that can be used to monitor junction temperature.

The LM5160DNTBKEVM supports a wide operating range of input voltages from 1.6V to 50V with a maximum output current of 6A, and a maximum efficiency of 95%, and an adjustable switching period of 2.2 to 7.5 us. The LM5160DNTBKEVM features a synchronous buck topology, which works by pushing the output voltage down through a pair of symmetrical transistors in order to convert the higher input voltage to a lower output voltage. The synchronization is done using a low-power, low-cost controller that optimizes efficiency, regulation, and transient response. The controller boasts of several features such as, it senses the voltage across the inductor to regulate current, it measures power dissipation every switching period to adjust the switching frequency for optimized efficiency, and it provides short circuit protection using inhibit logic.
The LM5160DNTBKEVM also features several unique features such as active voltage position (AVP) mode, adaptive shoot-thru current protection (ASCP), and auto-deglitch output voltage overshoot. The AVP mode helps to reduce input current ripple to improve light load efficiency, while the ASCP helps to reduce switch-off current ringing and potential secondary breakdown. The auto-deglitch output voltage overshoot helps to reduce voltage droop by actively sensing output voltage, and dynamically adjusting the peak current limit to compensate for the overshoot.
