The LM5170EVM-BIDIR is an evaluation platform designed to quickly evaluate the performance of the LM5170, a bidirectional voltage regulator from Texas Instruments. This device can provide up to 3A of output current in boost mode and up to 2.5A of output current in buck-boost configuration. This application board is ideal for high efficiency and high power density board powered applications such as telecom, automotive, and industrial systems.
The LM5170EVM-BIDIR\'s main features are its wide operating input voltage range from 5V to 60V and a wide range of output voltage from 0.5V to 54V. It also has integrated safety features such as self-limiting loop that protects against overcurrent and thermal runaway, undervoltage lockout, and short-circuit and output overvoltage protection. Additionally, it has adjustable frequency of up to 11MHz, allowing for a small solution size.
The application board also includes an optional RS-233 interface for communication and control with a compatible host computer. With the RS-232 interface, users can monitor and control current and voltage as well as set the frequencies and output voltage via the supplied graphical user interface. As a result, the LM5170EVM-BIDIR enables quick debugging and prototyping for end-products.
The LM5170EVM-BIDIR works on principles similar to those of other off-line switched mode power supplies. In DC/DC application, it will regulate an input voltage to an output voltage using pulse-width-modulated (PWM) control. A coil stores the energy from the input voltage and transfers it to the load. The converter is modulation controlled by the microcontroller, which will adjust the duty cycle of the PWM signal to maintain the desired voltage at the output. The converter\'s operating frequency and duty cycle, set by the microcontroller, determine the load current and output voltage.
In AC/DC application, the LM5170-EVM-BIDIR will transform an alternating voltage (AC) to a direct voltage (DC) by using a bridge rectifier, smoothing capacitor and a choke coil. The bridge rectifier is typically a four-diode device whose job is to convert AC into half-wave rectified DC voltage. The smoothing capacitor is used to store energy from the AC input and, together with the choke, prevents unwanted voltage spikes in the output. The DC output voltage is then regulated by using the same PWM control method as mentioned above.
