MUR815G is a four-terminal Unidirectional silicon controlled rectifier which are highly suitable for switching and phase control applications. It features a peak repetitive reverse voltage of 800V and repetitive peak off-state current of 15A. MUR815G is present in a TO-220 molded plastic package which has individual isolated tab. Due to its rugged construction, it is intended for use in general purpose and industrial control applications.

MUR815G Application Field

The main fields of applications of MUR815G includes motor drives, switching mode power supply, AC and DC phase control, uninterruptible power supply (UPSs), DC motor control, light dimmer, inrush current limiters and temperature control. In addition, it can also be used in general purpose rectification, freewheeling and clamping applications. It is widely used in switching converters, chargers, three-phase rectifiers, heating elements and inductive ballasts. These devices offers precise control of AC power circuits and has very low on-state losses.

MUR815G Working Principle

MUR815G has three terminals namely anode (A), gate (G) and cathode (K). The current flow from anode to cathode when the gate is triggered. When the gate is off, gate-cathode junction is reverse-biased, resulting in no current flow from the anode to the cathode. MUR815G works in four modes, namely Forward conducting, reverse blocking, Holding current and Triggering current.

In Forward Conducting mode, when a gate current is applied to the gate of the SCR, a large current can flow from the anode to the cathode through the SCR, which makes it ideal for use in controlling motor drives, switching mode power supplies and other load-switching applications.

In Reverse Blocking mode, the voltage on the gate terminal which is greater than the cathode-gate junction voltage prevents reverse current from flowing from cathode to anode through the SCR. This mode is commonly used in line rectification and buffer circuits.

In Holding Current mode, the current flowing through the device can be maintained at a steady level. Once the current has been reached, it is held until the gate voltage is decreased. This is used in AC phase control applications.

In Triggering Current mode, the current flowing through the device is increased gradually by controlling the gate voltage. This is used in motor control applications and to control the inrush current.

MUR815G has a wide range of applications due to its high breakdown voltage, large current carrying capability and low forward drop voltage. It is therefore an ideal component for switching mode power supplies, temperature control and motor control applications.
