UC2714NG4 Application Field and Working Principle

UC2714NG4 is a high-performance Half-Bridge Gate Driver, which is mainly applied to power management integrated circuit (PMIC) applications. It is designed for driving both primary and secondary side power MOSFETs. This product features an internal level-shifter, allowing it to be used for driving top-side bipolar switches and it is compatible with Electric Motors in harsh industrial, aircraft and automotive environments.

Introduction to PMICs – Gate Drivers

A power management integrated circuit (PMIC), also known as power management unit (PMU), is an integrated circuit (IC) in charge of the power supply of a system or device. Its main functions include battery management such as charging and discharging control, voltage regulation, signal feedback control, thermal management, clock or timing control, and voltage monitoring. A PMIC typically consists of one or more voltage regulators, and the specialized gate drivers that can drive power MOSFETs and their circuits.A gate driver is an electronic power switch designed to drive the gates of power MOSFETs and IGBTs. It is an interface between the low-level control signals and power switches. It provides the required current, voltage, rise and fall times and the necessary in-rush current and derating calculations of each switch. It is also used to provide blanking time or dead time to prevent cross-conduction in a bridge or half bridge topology.

UC2714NG4 Application Field

The UC2714NG4 offers accurate gate control in a wide range of applications such as brushless DC motor drivers, power supplies, motors and lighting control, automotive lamps, and solenoid drivers, etc. This product supports the rated duty cycle up to 90% with optimized gate driver current and is able to drive the MOSFET or IGBT at the highest speed. The output current regulated by this device is 5A (typical).It also supports variable peak current control, which allows for a variable peak current to be selected from a maximum of 9A. This enables a wide range of gate drivers, from simple peak and hold gate drivers to more complex multi-phase gate drivers that are capable of driving the power MOSFETs operating in tough switching conditions.Moreover, this device features an on-chip acceleration detect circuit, which is designed to protect the driver from overvoltage and overcurrent conditions. This device is able to detect the acceleration voltage caused by IGBT short circuit and it responds immediately by disabling the gate driver, thus preventing any damages.

UC2714NG4 Working Principle

The UC2714NG4 is a Half-Bridge Gate Driver that controls the gate of the MOSFETs enabling them to switch at high speed. The working principle of this device is based on full-bridge resonance.A full bridge uses the output voltage of one stage to energize the second stage, thereby reducing the voltage swing at the output. This reduces losses due to current flow in the reverse direction and reveals a four-phase output waveform. If the two stages are connected to each other via a transformer then the oscillation of currents through the two stages creates a resonant mode which further increases the efficiency of the switch.The UC2714NG4 can achieve 95% efficiency if the output voltage is properly calculated. At this bridge, the voltage output will oscillate between the two stages at a frequency close to the resonant frequency. The UC2714NG4 also features a noise reduction system which is designed to eliminate any high frequency noise in the output voltage. It has three filter types: a low pass filter, a band pass filter and a high pass filter.
