The UC2714N is a pulse width modulation (PWM) type gate drive controller, specifically developed for motor control applications. The device provides an integrated set of features and functions to simplify the design process and reduce system cost of motor drives. The UC2714N provides up to 4.5V of drive, enabling it to drive power MOSFETs and IGBTs with very low voltage drops. Other features include a logic-controlled brake operation, split supply operation, regenerative braking (bypassing the output of the system, reducing the need for external braking resistors), a wide operating temperature range, and built-in overvoltage and undervoltage protection.

The UC2714N is designed to drive two or three phase motors with a maximum of four power devices, including two low-side power devices and two high-side power devices with asymmetrical characteristics, one low-side power device and one high-side power device with symmetrical characteristics, or one low-side power device and one low-side IGBT with asymmetrical characteristics. The UC2714N also has the capability to drive power MOSFETs or IGBTs with no minimum voltage requirement, making it ideal for gate driver applications.

The UC2714N has two operating modes: PWM mode and static mode. In static mode, the output is always on and will remain at that level. This mode is typically used for zero current detection in motor drives. In PWM mode, the UC2714N modulates the output level in accordance with the input signal. This mode is typically used when driving a motor, as the output voltage level is modulated to control the motor speed.

The UC2714N utilizes several protection functions, including short circuit protection, overvoltage protection, and undervoltage protection. The overvoltage protection function senses when the output voltage has exceeded a predetermined threshold and will shut off the output by disabling the gate drive circuit. The undervoltage protection function is useful for when the input voltage to the device falls below a certain threshold, ensuring that the motor does not go haywire. The short circuit protection function also helps to protect the motor from destructive current flows, as it will shut off the output when a short circuit condition is detected.

The UC2714N is a multi-mode gate driver controller ideal for motor drives, including brushless DC motors, induction motors, AC servo motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors.
