The UC2715N is a three terminal PWM control IC designed for driving AC/DC triacs. It is designed for controlling resistive and inductive loads in applications such as AC speed control, AC line synchronization, temperature controllers, and current limiters.

Application Fields

The UC2715N is suitable for a broad range of AC/DC triacs. This includes light dimmers, motor speed control, motor control, and current limiting applications where control difficulty is experienced due to over-driving of devices.

Working Principle

The UC2715N functions by first controlling the peak triac gate voltage using an external resistor, which provides a voltage divider across the internal 15V reference. An external timing capacitor is used to provide the desired triac gate charge/discharge timing. The internal comparator then compares the voltage on the gate divider to the sawtooth waveform from the oscillator. When the sawtooth waveform goes above the gate divider voltage, the output is high and gate current is applied to the triac gate.

The UC2715N also features a discharge bootstrap circuit, which prevents over-driving of the triac gate by discharging the gate when the oscillator period has expired. This helps to ensure a steady DC voltage is maintained across the triac for consistent control.

In addition, it also features a signal sense amplifier, which senses the zero crossover point of the sinusoidal signal. This allows the UC2715N to accurately control the gate firing point and minimize wasted switching losses.

The UC2715N has a wide operating temperature range and low power requirements, making it suitable for applications such as those mentioned above.
