The ULN2003AING4 is a Darlington array chip from Texas Instruments that consists of seven NPN single darlington transistors, each transistor has an associated diode for protection during fault conditions. This device gives a high current gain, a low saturation voltage, and operates on low power consumption. With its compact form factor and low cost, this array is widely used in a variety of systems such as stepper motor control, logic level translation, and audio amplification.
Application Fields
- Stepper Motor Control: The ULN2003AING4 can be used to control the steps in a stepper motor, as the Seven darlington pairs of the chip can easily switch 7 separate coils in the motor. This turns the motor at a fixed speed and also drives it based on required steps.
- Logic Level Translation: The ULN2003AING4 can also be used for level shifting and conversion between low and high logic levels. The output of the device can provide up to 500mA current and the characteristc low saturation voltage ensures that the output voltage does not drop below a certain level.
- Audio Amplification: This array can also be used for audio amplification by using voltage amplification via transistors at the output stage. This can be used to increase the amplifier\'s power efficiency, reducing static power consumption and reducing distortion of the output signal.
- Relay Driver: The ULN2003AING4 can be used as a driver for a relay that increases the current capability of the relay. This application is useful for applications such as switching high power loads like LEDs or motors.
- Motor Controller: The ULN2003AING4 can be used with a microcontroller to control a DC motor by driving the motor\'s two coils. The two coils of the motor are driven by two of the Darlington pairs of the chip in opposite directions, this results in the rotation of the motor.
Working Principle
The ULN2003AING4 consists of seven DARLINGTON-connected NPN transistors, each transistor is composed of two stages, the first stage is a Darlington pair, and the second stage is a common-emitter amplifier that amplifies the current. Each transistor of the Darlington pair is connected to the base of the second stage via an isolation diode for protection. A Darlington pair is a high current gain structure, with the inputs of both transistors connected to a single base, so that the current from one transistor is amplified by the second transistor.
The ULN2003AING4 has three input pins, one Central Grounded Input Pin and two side input pins that control the transistor\'s base current and the output transistor\'s collector current. An external resistor is provided on the input pins, which changes the level of base current that is passed on to the transistor\'s base. This input resistance is also used to limit the input current and to protect the circuit from transient overvoltage. The input resistor also provides temperature compensation and limits the amount of current to the base of the transistors.
The output of the array is connected to an output transistor\'s collector that is able to source up the 500mA current. The transistor output voltage will not saturate below the minimum level, due to the diode protection used for each transistor in the Darlington pair. The power dissipation of the device is determined by the output current and the voltage rating of the ULN2003AING4.
The ULN2003AING4 is widely used in a variety of applications due to its high current gain, low saturation voltage, and low power consumption. With its array of seven darlington transistors, this chip is able to easily control a variety of devices with ease. The ULN2003AING4 is an ideal choice for stepper motor control, logic level translation, audio amplification, and motor controllers.
