TVS - Diodes

Transient Voltage Spikes (TVS) diodes are semiconductor devices designed to protect sensitive components from voltage transients or power surges. The 1N5635 diode is a Unidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) rated for 35V and 1500W peak pulse power dissipation.

1N5635 Application Field and Working Principle

The 1N5635 diode is typically used in a broad range of applications, from consumer electronics to automotive systems and industrial equipment. One of the primary applications for the device is line protection for Ethernet cables, with the diode used in the line interface circuit.

1N5635 diodes are designed to protect sensitive components from voltage spikes caused by nearby lightning strikes or power inductive loading events. The device is comprised of a Zener diode and a voltage regulator, which are able to absorb transient energy from the power rails and then gradually convert it into heat.

To accurately protect against transient voltage spikes, the 1N5635 must be operated in conjunction with a resistor. This is to ensure that the device is able to absorb the maximum allowable energy and prevent it from propagating down the line. The resistance value should be chosen to match the rated clamping voltage of the device.

The 1N5635 diode is designed to limit the transient voltage spike to a maximum of around 35V, depending on the exact configuration of the device. Its operating temperature range is -55°C to +125°C, and it is capable of pulse power dissipation up to a maximum of 1500W.

The 1N5635 diode is also designed to provide a high ESD protection rating, and is classified as ESD Class 2 for Human Body Model (HBM), Machine Model (MM) and Charged Device Model (CDM). This classification is based on its ability to dissipate the energy from a static discharge pulse without causing permanent damage.
