1N5646A is a transient voltage suppressor diode (TVS) which is used in electronic circuits to protect them from overvoltage transients. The 1N5646A diode is an unidirectional device and it is also commonly used to protect circuits from ESD (electrostatic discharge). It is also used to protect automotive circuits from overvoltage transients that may be caused by electro-mechanical and environmental sources.The 1N5646A is a series of high energy, unidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes. The SOD-123 is a 5-pin, small and low profile package.The 1N5646A is able to absorb ESD pulses of up to 15kV. This is an excellent capability considering that only a few other TVS diodes are able to absorb ESD pulses of such high voltages. This makes the 1N5646A an excellent device for protecting electronic circuits from ESD pulses.The 1N5646A diode is also quite resistant to high temperatures. It has a storage temperature range between -65°C and +150°C. This makes it suitable for use in environments where the temperature may vary quite a lot over a short period of time.The 1N5646A diode works on the principle of avalanche voltage breakdown. In the avalanche breakdown mode, a high electric field is created which causes electrons to gain enough energy that they can break free from their orbits and create electron-hole pairs. This enhances the current flow in the direction of applied voltage. The current amplifies and then it reaches the breakdown point which is known as the avalanche voltage. At the avalanche voltage, the diode becomes conducting and the voltage drops back to a safe level for the electronic circuit.The 1N5646A diode is suitable for use in various applications. It is used in circuits which require protection from electrostatic discharge, voltage spikes caused by lightning or other electro-mechanical phenomena.
