Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) is a semiconductor device extensively used in high power applications for switching purpose. It has a three layer construction-Emitter, Base and Collector. The top layer consists of a P+ N- body layer which acts as an anode whereas the bottom layer consists of N+ P- body layer which acts as a cathode. The middle layer (Base) consists of a semiconductor material. The three layers are then separated by an insulating layer.
