Working Principle

The ISL97656IRTZ is based on a switching regulator topology together with high-frequency switching. It uses a fixed frequency current-mode control architecture with a variable-frequency programmable peak current limit to achieve fast transient response and excellent line and load regulation. The device features an analog voltage reference, constant on-time control, and protection features such as over-voltage and over-temperature. The internal DAC has three programmable current limit settings with an option to configure over-voltage protection via I2C.

The regulator has three control modes: continuous mode, burst mode, and pulse-skipping mode. In continuous mode, the regulator operates at a fixed frequency and the output voltage is regulated by varying the on-time of the switch. In burst mode, the regulator operates in discontinuous conduction with a set on-time; the output voltage is regulated by varying the burst mode cycles. Finally, in pulse-skipping mode the regulator operates in a burst mode with adjustable on and off time.

The device also has a wide range of protection features. These include both over-voltage and over-temperature protection along with open-circuit and short-circuit protection. The output voltage can also be adjusted by an external resistor or by I2C interface.
