PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators
The LM5008MM/NOPB is a monolithic integrated DC-DC buck switching regulator with an integrated high side and low side power MOSFET, adjustable internal compensation network and current sensing. This device is designed to deliver a regulated output voltage and a maximum output current of 4A with efficiency up to 94%. It provides low quiescent current and low power dissipation while in the shutdown mode.
The LM5008MM/NOPB offers excellent line and load transient characteristics, fast response to load transient, and output voltage accuracy of 0.6%. It is also able to operate in a continuous mode up to 4.5V Vin and maintain excellent cross regulation, due to its temperature compensation, over-duty limit, and advanced soft-start controls. The device is available in thermally enhanced PowerPADTM packages.
Application Field
The LM5008MM/NOPB is ideal for applications where a high efficiency and fast response is desired. Typical application fields include mobile and portable computers, wireless communicators, notebooks and tablets, embedded board or industrial systems, and point of load converters.
Working Principle
The LM5008MM/NOPB operates by controlling the duty cycle of a buck converter, as illustrated in the figure below. The buck converter is an inductor-based voltage step-down device, and the output of the device is connected to an output filter to reduce the output ripple. The LM5008MM/NOPB incorporates a high-side and a low-side MOSFET in a single package, and uses a combination of hysteretic and voltage mode control schemes to regulate the output voltage. The hysteretic control scheme provides fast transient response whereas, the voltage mode control scheme is used to maintain an accurate output voltage.
The device includes an adjustable output voltage divider that helps to set the output voltage, adjustable soft-start and slew-rate settings, over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection, and internal soft-start allows the designer to set the current limit. To further improve the transient response and stability, the device also allows the user to adjust the internal compensation network for improved stability. Furthermore, the device includes an output drain current sensing feature that allows the user to monitor the output current.
