The LM5064PMHX/NOPB Hot Swap controller functions in accordance to a simple and elegant methodology. The controller begins by measuring the voltage of the Hot Swap device’s input signal. The voltage signal is sent to the internal sense resistor which is then converted into a current signal. This signal is then compared with a set point reference voltage signal. If the signal is found to be lower than the set point, then an enable signal is sent to the power MOSFET gate. This signal then turns on the power MOSFET to enable current to flow through the system. The LM5064PMHX/NOPB also has two specific protection features: Overvoltage Protection (OVP) and Overcurrent Protection (OCP). The OVP feature monitors the input voltage and if the inrush current is higher than the specified OVP threshold set point, then the controller turns off the power MOSFET to avoid damage. The OCP feature is used once the power MOSFET is enabled, and is used to monitor the current flowing through the output load. If the current exceeds the OCP threshold level, then the controller shuts off the power MOSFET to avoid damage.Conclusion
