Working Principle

The LM5100CMAX is a fully integrated, high-side gate driver with an adjustable voltage supply from 6V to 72V and an adjustable current limit. The LM5100CMAX is based on an efficient current-mode control topology with a fast turn-on time that only requires a single external resistor to set the peak current limit. The operating flow of the LM5100CMAX is shown in the figure below.

The LM5100CMAX is designed such that when the enable input (EN) is brought high, the device is enabled and the internal high-side MOSFET is turned on. The current through the internal MOSFET and external load (RL) is sensed by a current sense resistor (R sense) and is used to generate a control signal to control the output voltage of the external driver, thereby driving the external load (RL). The current limit is set by an external resistor (R ext) and the peak current limit is set by the internal control loop to ensure the output current does not exceed the current limit set by R ext. The LM5100CMAX also has a shutdown logic function that ensures that the device is disabled when the EN pin is brought low.
