The LM5100CSD is a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) with a gate driver optimized for use in high switching frequency applications like the trending switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) used in consumer and automotive products. Working Principle

The LM5100CSD gate driver uses a wide operating range of input voltages of up to 600V, with an adjustable gate drive current up to 1.9A per channel. The driver has a logic level MOSFET gate drive which can be enabled or disabled through the logic input signals. An internal timer circuit provides protection against potential latch-up events and overcurrent conditions. The IC also feature short circuit protection and thermal shutdown, which trip the output driver in case of overcurrent and over temperature conditions, respectively.

The IC includes a unique integrated logic module that provides three level of protection & control: UVLO, short circuit protection, and thermal protection. Input UVLO signals allow control of the driver’s output during supply-off conditions. An external sense resistor is used to detect the current and trigger a fault signal. The sense resistor should be placed between the VCC pin and the source of the FET, for each channel.

The LM5100CSD allows designers to reduce the number of system components and ensures that the power IC is protected from damage. The built-in foldback feature decreases the maximum load current in case of an over temperature condition and thus avoids catastrophic failure of the IC. The internal timer circuit disables the driver for a set time (150 ns) to prevent possible latch-up events by delaying the turn-on of the driver.

The LM5100CSD can also be used with isolated gate drivers to provide extra safety level and an even more reliable connection between the power stage components. The combined use of the LM5100CSD with isolated gate drivers can be used to generate a galvanically and thus electrically isolated gate drive signal.
