SI4112-BM consists of two major components: Frequency Synthesizer and Digital Clock Generator. The Frequency Synthesizer consists of three sub-blocks: phase-locked-loop (PLL), phase-frequency-detector (PFD) and reference oscillator. The Digital Clock Generator includes two sub-blocks: frequency synthesizer and output buffer. The Frequency Synthesizer generates the input clock signals for the Digital Clock Generator to produce output clock signals.
The Frequency Synthesizer generates tunable output clock frequencies from a stable, low-noise, crystal oscillator reference input. The PLL module contains a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The PFD monitors two analog inputs and makes adjustments to the VCO frequency each time the two inputs differs from each other. The reference oscillator blocks provide a low-noise stabilized reference clock, while the ADC and the VCO generate the desired output clock signals.
The Digital Clock Generator is responsible for generating output clock signals based on a given reference clock frequency. It can create a range of output clock frequencies and duty cycles, as well as set the frequency of a range of outputs. The output buffer provides isolation between the input and output stages, allowing for a cleaner and more reliable signal. The output buffer also supports various clock formats, such as LVDS and LVPECL.
