The device operates on the principle of a voltage drop across a transistor when voltage is applied to its gate. When there is a voltage applied to the gate, current is allowed to flow from the drain to the source. The MOSFET operates as an switch where its on-resistance (RDS(on)) is a function of the voltage applied to its gate. The lower the voltage applied to its gate, the lower the RDS(on) will be. In order for the MOSFET to be in the "on" state, it must have an input current of at least 4.5V, which is referred to as its threshold voltage, Vth. This lets the MOSFET know that it is being driven and that it needs to switch to its "on" state.
