Application Field

The STP16C596M, or STP16C596 for short, is a 16-bit constant-current LED driver, with an operating temperature ranging from -40℃ to 125℃. Working Principle

The STP16C596 works by controlling the flow of current through each LED according to its output register settings. A voltage source is applied across the external source and sinks of each LED channel. This voltage source can be either a programmed external voltage source, or a single Bus power supply. The STP16C596 then regulates the current through each LED with a constant output current provided by a fixed current sink.

The STP16C596 supports both pre-programmed as well as adjustable current sink. The pre-programmed current sink ensures fast start-up and simplifies the system wiring. The adjustable current sink gives more flexibility in setting the level and slope of the output current.

The STP16C596 also supports blink frequency control and display dimming with its on-chip logic. This enables the controller to have a better control of the LED light that produced and achieve good visual effect. In addition, the on-chip linear or logarithmic dimming control reduces LED power dissipation, ensuring that it operates as efficient as possible.

The STP16C596 also includes internal thermal protection to prevent over temperature situation. The output current of each LED channel has an adjustable hold time to ensure reliable operation of the system.
