A 2N5172 is a single bipolar junction transistor (BJT). It is primarily intended for use in medium-power, high frequency amplifier applications. The 2N5172 consists of a two-layer semiconductor material with three terminals, namely the base (B), collector (C) and emitter (E). The transistor has three heavily doped PN layers, P-type, N-type and P-type. A small current injected through the base can control the larger current flowing through the collector and emitter.

The 2N5172 transistor is categorized under medium power transistors and is the most general-purpose bipolar transistor. It exhibits good linearity and it can withstand a wide range of transients and switch supply voltages.
