When the diode is forward biased, a majority population of holes exists on the p-type side, and a majority population of free electrons exists on the n-type side. This creates an electric field between the n-type and p-type sides and is the main principle of a diode.When the anode (positive side) of the diode is connected to a positive of the external circuit, it creates a potential sweeper at the P-N junction. The electrons, which are majority carriers, flow from the negative side to the positive side, and the holes flow from positive to negative, thereby creating an electric current in the external circuit. Once the voltage of the diode becomes equal to the potential of the external circuit, the current will stop flowing. This is referred to as forward conduction.On the other hand, when the cathode (negative side) is connected to the positive of the external circuit, the P-N junction of the diode is in reverse bias condition.
