PMIC - Gate Drivers

L6384D is a low-side gate driver that belongs to the family of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC). This device is among the most efficient gate drivers in the market, as it can handle a maximum power up to 2.5kW. It provides an insulated low-side gate drive voltage of 14V and an operating range between 0V and 40V.

The L6384D is an ideal device for applications like Motor Drivers, Power Supplies, Automotive Ignition Systems and Lighting Systems, where it provides boosted gate-drive voltage, allowing fast discharging and driving of high-power transistors. This same gate drive voltage can be used for reliable switching operations.

Working principle

Two supplies are needed for the L6384D to work properly, a logic supply from the micro-controller and a high voltage supply from the power source. The two supplies can be connected with a common ground for low-side gate driving.

At the input side, a logic signal is receive from the micro-controller in order to control the switch to be open or closed. This logic signal is amplified and then transmitted directly to the gate of a high-power transistor. The low-side gate driver then controls the capacity of the switch by sending a voltage or current to the transistor\'s gate in order to create a bipolar voltage.

The device is also able to provide a slow transition time between on-off states, avoiding the risk of generating short circuits. By doing that, it increases the reliability of the device and allows it to operate at high frequencies, even up to 40MHz.

Applications

The L6384D can be used in a wide variety of applications, including Motor Drivers, Power Supplies and Automotive Ignition Systems.
