The LM5031SDX / NOPB is an adjustable advanced current-mode flyback controller for regulating switch mode power converters. The versatile LM5031SDX / NOPB, with its wide operating range of 1.20V to 60V and adjustable oscillator frequency of 400kHz to 2MHz, enables designers to build low-cost, high-efficiency point-of-load and distributed power systems with ease.With its wide input range, the LM5031SDX / NOPB can reduce power-stage component count, minimize number of layers, and save board area. It features a low start-up current, fast transient response, and low current-limit accuracy.The LM5031SDX / NOPB is designed to be used with external power MOSFETs in a variety of converter topologies. The device implements the basic functions of a quasi-resonant flyback controller while providing protection features like output overvoltage and short-circuit protection. The device includes a user-programmable soft-start feature, selectable voltage-mode or current-mode operation, adjustable current limit with accurate sensing, adjustable slew-rate limitation, adjustable loop compensation for stability, and an optional Sleep or Burst mode operation mode.The LM5031SDX / NOPB is housed in a 2mm x 2mm package and is the most cost-efficient flyback controller available today. It is ideally suited for use in point-of-load and distributed power systems, including AC/DC and DC/DC industrial, medical, telecom, and data-acquisition applications.
Working Principle of LM5031SDX/NOPB
The LM5031SDX/NOPB works on a flyback control principle. It is a current-mode flyback controller with programmable oscillator frequency, phase shift and power limiting. The controller monitors an internal current-sense comparator voltage to give a tight load current-limit control. It senses inductor current through an external resistor. In combination with the adjustable oscillator frequency and phase-shift control, the LC filter can be optimized to achieve a wide-bandwidth voltage-mode current-conversion loop with fast transient response and minimum EMI for switching converters. The current-limit level is set with an external resistor, to which the internal current-sense comparator voltage is scaled.The LM5031SDX/NOPB regulates output voltage is sensed at the output-terminal and is compared to the internal reference voltage. An error amplifier with an internal compensation network provides good transient response and stability. It is also configurable to operate in open-loop or closed-loop mode for voltage regulation. The device can be programmed for PWM (pulse-width modulation) or PSM (pulse-skipping modulation) mode of regulation. The operational features of the LM5031SDX/NOPB include soft-start and frequency control, phase-shift control, current-limit control and sleep-mode operation. It also features built-in power-on reset, overvoltage and short-circuit protection, protection against accidental output short-circuits, and more.
