Introduction of LM5105SDX/NOPB

The LM5105SDX/NOPB is an isolated, dual-channel, high-side and low-side, half-bridge or full-bridge motor driver integrated circuit (IC). This three-phase gate driver integrates two low-side and two high-side NMOSFETs, enabling the user to control two N-channel power switches. It belongs to the family of Power Management and Motor Control Integrated Circuits (PMIC-Gate Drivers). The rated current for the low-side and high-side N-channel MOSFETs is 4.5A and 10A respectively.

Application Field

Working Principle

The LM5105SDX/NOPB is a full-bridge motor driver circuit implemented using two low-side and two high-side N-Channel MOSFETs. The high-side and low-side switches are activated when the Gate Driver IC output is driven high (VCC) and low (GND), respectively. The high-side MOSFET is enabled when the Gate Driver IC output is driven high (VCC). In this state, the low-side MOSFET is disabled because the Gate Driver IC output is driven low (GND). When the high-side MOSFET is enabled, the voltage across the load terminal is increased accordingly. When the Gate Driver IC output is reversed, the high-side MOSFET is disabled and the low-side MOSFET is enabled, decreasing the voltage across the load terminal. This helps in driving the DC motor forward or in reverse.The power switches are switched using the P-channel and N-channel MOSFETs because the Gate Driver IC output cannot drive heavier loads. The P-channel MOSFET is driven for controlling the high-side power switch and the N-channel MOSFET is driven for controlling the low-side power switch. The Gate Driver IC output drives a logic signal to the gates of the P-channel and the N-channel MOSFETs. The Gate Driver IC consists of clamping diodes to absorb transient voltages generated during the switching of the power switches.

Safety Features

The LM5105SDX/NOPB has many safety features to minimize the possibility of device damage due to failure. It has over-temperature protection and over-voltage protection. Moreover, it implements multi-level overtemperature protection to protect the devices from potential damage due to high temperature. The operating temperature is also monitored to protect the device from potential damage due to changes in the ambient temperature.The Gate Driver IC also includes current limit protection which is used to prevent the current from exceeding the rated value of the load. Furthermore, it includes over-current protection which quickly detects abnormal current levels and triggers protection circuitry to cut off the power.
