TNY254P Application Field and Working PrincipleThe TNY254P is a 3-pin, offline switcher suitable for low power applications. The device combines primary-side regulation, adaptive valley current-mode control, and an integrated auto-restart current-limit protection into a single package, allowing users to reduce their BOM count and save board space. The TNY254P provides true Green-Mode operation, effectively reducing no-load input power, enabling favorable energy efficiency ratings. It is ideal for low power off-line applications such as adapters, chargers, and LED lighting.Primary-side regulation allows the TNY254P to eliminate the opto-coupler bias winding components needed in traditional flyback PWM control, helping reduce the design cost and complexity. It also simplifies setting the internal output voltage-tracking voltage range, meaning the switching frequency does not vary. This reduces design complexity, thus saving cost and improving reliability.The TNY254P features automatic Valley mode current control, facilitating a faster load transient response. valley current control makes the device sensitive to load current, meaning that it can quickly adjust the secondary output voltage to supplement the load currents. The maximum peak valley current (MPC) is adjustable via an external resistor.The TNY254P also offers an adjustable auto-restart current limit (ARCL) protection feature. ARCL responds to over-current conditions by turning off the primary switch, thus protecting the system from damage. The restart current limit can also be programmed with an external resistor to achieve the desired protection level.In terms of its specifactions, the TNY254P provides an operating frequency range of 70kHz-175kHz, an area of operation up to 100mA and an adjustable output voltage range of 2.5V-15V. An inrush current selector pin simplifies the design of over-current switchers, thus increasing system reliability. It also supports 16VAC to 353VAC line input and provides 6kV ESD protection, thus suitable for most commercial and industrial applicationsIn summary, the TNY254P is a small, cost-effective, and highly integrated AC-DC converter that offers high efficiency and a wide output voltage range.
