PMIC - Battery Chargers are a type of power management safety programmed device which provides regulated power to devices. They are used in a wide range of applications, from consumer electronics to medical equipment. The TSM1014ID is a newer, more advanced model from Texas Instruments, Inc. It is a charger IC that supports both Lead Acid and Lithium ion batteries.
The multi-function, top-mounted TSM1014ID is an integrated, high-efficiency 4A peak current-mode buck-boost charger and system power management device. It is uniquely designed so that it can direct a constant current to charge lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries, and also supply system power with up to 4A peak. It is programmed to enable wide input range capability and regulation with a ±1% voltage regulation accuracy. With built-in safety features, the TSM1014ID protects the device from input overvoltage and overcurrent conditions. The integrated adjustable float voltage and pre-charge/pre-discharge current also allow for flexibility in charger implementation. In addition, on-chip acoustic feedback provides audible indication of the device status to the user.
The TSM1014ID maintains a constant-voltage and current output during battery charging. When the voltage regulation is required, undervoltage protection is enabled. The TSM1014ID also has pre-charge and pre-discharge current protection. This enables the device to check whether the battery has sufficient charge to accept a full load and make sure the device is providing enough power to the load. Finally, the TSM1014ID has a sleep-mode feature which reduces the amount of power consumed during low-power or idle operation.
The integrated two-stage battery charging technology of the TSM1014ID allows for fast and efficient battery charging. During the constant current stage, the TSM1014ID will provide current to the battery until the upper-voltage threshold is met. The constant voltage stage will then begin, which maintains the voltage across the battery for a specified amount of time until the lower-voltage threshold is met. Once the voltage reaches the lower-voltage threshold, the TSM1014ID will then enter the float voltage stage and maintain a constant voltage across the battery as long as needed.
The TSM1014ID is suitable for use in many different applications such as automotive and industrial battery packs, smart backpacks, and portable electronic devices.
