Battery chargers are devices that convert electrical energy into stored electrical energy in a battery. Battery chargers have become an essential part of everyday life, as they not only allow you to keep your electronic devices powered, but also can be used to power any device requiring battery power, including electric cars. The TSM101AID is a Linear Technology battery charger that is designed to provide a high efficiency charging solution.
The TSM101AID is a highly integrated, general-purpose battery charger, designed for three-cell lithium-ion, lithium-polymer and 4-cell NiMH/NiCd battery packs. It offers linear current mode (LCM) and high-side switch modes for stand-alone applications and can be used to charge a wide range of batteries. In addition, the TSM101AID also offers a high-efficiency, active-high internal power switch with level-shifting FET device to protect the charger’s throughput voltage, as well as temperature and over-charge protection.
The TSM101AID features a wide input range, allowing it to operate from any DC source and is powered from an AC adapter. It has two charge cycle paths that are easily adjustable for optimizing charge cycles for different battery capacities and types. The two independent charging channels are optimized for a range of Li-ion, Li-polymer, NiMH and NiCd cell chemistries.
For low-power charging, the TSM101AID can provide a constant current. This allows a lower current draw and can substantially increase the battery life and reduce waste heat, since the charger does not need to output more current than the battery can absorb. For higher power charging, the TSM101AID can provide a constant voltage, allowing it to charge the battery faster and more efficently. In addition, the TSM101AID also features an adjustable absolute value (PAV) voltage limit, allowing the charge rate to be adjusted to optimize the battery cycle life.
In addition to its charging capabilities, the TSM101AID also features temperature monitoring and over-voltage protection. The temperature monitoring feature allows the charger to detect if the battery has been overcharged or if the battery has become too hot due to overcharging. The over voltage protection feature protects the charger’s output from possible over voltages from either the AC adapter or from the battery itself. This helps to ensure the safety of both the charger and the battery.
The TSM101AID is well suited for use in a wide range of applications, such as hand-held electronics, portable medical devices, automotives and more. With its wide input range, multiple charge cycle paths and temperature and over voltage protections, the TSM101AID is well suited for use in many of today’s applications.
