TSM101ID

Power Management IC (PMIC) is the driving force behind electronics design. They are the link between the energy source and the load, responsible for the regulation, conversion, distribution and management of electrical energy. Battery chargers are a form of PMIC that are used to recharge a wide range of batteries from tiny button cells to large-scale automotive batteries.

The TSM101ID is a dual-channel, buck-boost battery charger IC from Texas Instruments (TI). It is a member of their TINYBUCKTM family of PMICs, targeting a broad range of battery chemistries including NiMH, NiCd, Li-ion, and lead-acid. By utilizing an optimized buck-boost control topology, the TSM101ID supports a wide range of input and output voltages, as well as a wide range of battery voltages. It can accommodate both constant-voltage (CV) charging and constant-current (CC) charging.

When operating, the TSM101ID monitors the battery voltage while using a simple resistive divider to measure the input voltage. From these, it can derive the voltage differential between the battery and the input, this is the "error" voltage. Using the error voltage, the TSM101ID adjusts the output voltage by applying duty cycles to both its buck and boost channels to reach the programmed battery voltage.

The device also has an adaptive safety timer feature for over-charging protection, as well as an automatic pre-charge capability for cold or aged batteries. The Fault Master Output (FMO) feature is an integrated fault protection system which is triggered whenever the current in the battery reaches predetermined levels. And it is designed to minimize losses in the powerpath during CC charging.

In addition, the TSM101ID offers a wide range of features including adjustable I2C compatible interface, 10-bit ADCs, and charge timing and termination detection. Its wide supply range and low quiescent current make it an ideal choice for low power and battery powered applications.
