Working Principle

ZXTN25015DFHTA is a small signal NPN transistor, which basically works on the same principle of all other transistors, with the addition of a large ESD protection. A small signal, like base current, is connected to the base electrode, while the collector current is outputted from the collector electrode. When a small base current is applied to the base electrode, a larger current, in the order of hundreds of times, will be outputted from the collector side.

By setting a positive voltage on the base, enough energy will be generated to create an electron "avalanche" effect from the collector side. This creates excess charge carriers which make the base-to-collector region very conductive and can allow large DC current to flow from the collector side to the base side. Another way to think about it is that a small base current can allow larger current to "flow off" from the collector side.

The Max allowable drain current is 250mA, and the total power dissipation is 3.6W. The large ESD protection is especially helpful when switching large DC currents, like in motor control circuits, where the high ESD can cause malfunction and damage to the circuit.
