2N5224 is a NPN transistor manufactured by SI-P301-V group, which belongs to the Single Bipolar (BJT) Transistors family. It was designed for a wide range of applications, with gain of 300 at IC = 1mA, 100mW power dissipation, 1MHz maximum frequency, and -65° to +150° storage and operation temperature.

This versatile transistor can be used for various purposes such as audio and general purpose amplification, switches, logic inverters and oscillators, amplifying signals.

The main function of the 2N5224 transistor is to switch the electric current between two states.

The transistor works on the principle of biasing. A transistor has three terminals: Emitter, Collector, and Base. When a current is caused to flow through the Base-Emitter junction, the electrons of the Emitter gets attracted to the Base, which in turn makes the Collector-Base junction to get forward biased. Thus the electric current flows from collector to emitter.

When there is no bias current, the collector-base junction is reverse biased, so no current flows from collector to emitter.

The base current can be controlled by the bias voltage applied to the Base terminal. This current controls the collector current, and hence the voltage, impedance and so on, of the Collector.

The most common DC biasing arrangement for the 2N5224 transistor is the Emitter-Bias circuit. The positive supply voltage is applied to the Emitter, and the negative supply voltage is bypassed to the Base. This bias arrangement is commonly used because it maintains a large signal range without the use of an additional bias voltage.

The AC biasing arrangement can be either the Collector-Coupled or Base-Coupled circuit. In the Collector-Coupled circuit, the signal is connected to the transistor’s Collector, and the bias voltage is applied to the Base. In the Base-Coupled circuit, the signal is connected to the transistor’s Base, and the bias voltage is applied to the Collector.

The major application field of 2N5224 transistor is high-speed switching, as it has a high switching speed. This makes the transistor perfect for switching in digital circuits and applications that require high-frequency operations. Another application is to amplify any AC or DC signal over a single frequency, or a range of frequencies.

The 2N5224 transistor is one of the most popular transistors used in medium-power switching, and has been used in many audio amplifiers and even in the Apple IIe.
