AO3406 is a low-voltage (3.3V), low-power MOSFET driver which can interface directly with a TTL logic or microcontroller-based system and it is widely used in places where the swtich needs to be accessed remotely, or whenever a high-current/high-voltage switch needs to be controlled by low-voltage, low-power logic signals. This device can replace the relays or mechanical switches and can provide much higher reliability and switching speed with much lower power losses due to the switching losses and contact resistances, therefore significantly reducing the overall system cost as well as power consumption.
Application Field
AO3406 device is particularly suitable for automotive and industrial applications, such as heating and lighting control, locomotive and heavy duty vehicle control systems and many more. Moreover, it can be used in telecom and networking systems, automotive electronics, smart homes, HVAC systems, residential and commercial lighting and many other applications which require a high switching current or high voltage control.
Working Principle
The AO3406 is based on the MOSFET technology and features an integrated control and gate drive circuit. It operates with a single positive or negative control supply voltage, and can drive N-channel MOSFETs with gate voltages ranging from -12V to 12V. The working principle of the device is based on the application of a voltage to the gate, which in turn controls the current passing through the channel. When the gate voltage is below the threshold voltage the channel resistance is high, so the current is low, and when the gate voltage is above the threshold voltage the channel resistance is low and the current is high.
The device can also be used to provide load current sensing, load voltage sensing and load disconnection functions, which make it a powerful and versatile MOSFET driver. In addition, it has an overvoltage shutdown circuit, a power-on reset circuit, an undervoltage lockout circuit and a built-in thermal shut-down circuit, which makes it very reliable in operation. Also, it has an ON/OFF status output which can be used to provide an indication of when the device is switched on or off. Furthermore, the device has adjustable slew rates, over current protection and two external shutdown pins.
