AO4630 is a small, low on-resistance, high speed, large current, standard logic level enhancement mode vertical, N-type power field effect transistor (FET). It is contained in an SO-8 surface mount package, and is specifically designed for battery powered and other power management applications.
AO4630 has advanced on-resistance with fast switching times. Its typical application fields include board-level, telecom, and DC-DC converter applications. It is also used as current limiting components to dampen current transients. The device is well suited for battery-powered parallel and series applications, such as ultra-low current drain DC-DC converters, portable devices and mobile phones.
The working principle of the AO4630 is based on the fundamental physical working approach of the field effect transistor. It operates using an active gate with a small gate-drain capacitance. This capacitance causes electrons to flow from the drain to the source, establishing an electric field, or field effect, between them. The amount of electron flow, known as “gate current,” is controlled by the gate’s voltage, which is set or adjusted by applying an external voltage. As a result, the current passing through the device can be controlled.
An important feature of the AO4630 is its low on-resistance, which allows it to move large volumes of current quickly and with minimal loss. Therefore, a system that relies on the transistor to supply considerable current over short periods of time can be powered much more efficiently than one with a higher on-resistance device. Additionally, the device’s small size allows it to be placed in more confined spaces, such as mobile applications.
