The TIP36 series of bipolar junction transistors (BJT) is a very versatile device and can be used in a variety of applications, from basic switching to more advanced analog signal processing. The TIP36 series is most commonly used for power switching and voltage regulation, thanks to its high current rating, low saturation voltage and relatively low noise. TIP36s are also commonly used in switching applications such as DC-to-DC converters, motor speed control, voltage and current regulation.

To achieve this, the device relies on two physical processes; the forward bias and reverse bias. In forward bias, current flow through the BJT is generated between the collector and emitter. This current will be dependent on the current being applied at the base and is further amplified by the base-to-emitter junction. In reverse bias, the BJT is reverse-biased, meaning current will not flow between the collector and emitter. This is beneficial as it allows for low-voltage operations.

In power switching applications, TIP36 is used for the control of solenoids, relays, motors and other DC devices. When used in this capacity, TIP36s are usually connected in series or parallel with a load. The resistance of the load is taken into account when calculating the base current and voltage to ensure that the Joule heating during the flow of current does not produce too much heat. When used in voltage and current regulation, TIP36s provide a stable current or voltage output, even when the input voltage varies. This is achieved by connecting the TIP36s to a voltage reference circuit, which adjusts the base voltage to maintain a constant output current or voltage.
