1N6486 Diodes are silicon devices that boast a great number of functionalities ranging from low-voltage drop to surge current capability. Its application fields, working principle and electrical features make it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications.The 1N6486 Diode are commonly used in dc-dc converters, rectifiers, and power supplies, which require high breakdown voltage, surge current capability and low on-state voltage. It also has an application in flyback transformers, motor control systems and reverse polarity protection.As a Zener diode, the 1N6486 is specifically designed to function as a voltage reference source and clamp device.The 1N6486 diodes are manufactured using heavily-doped p-type and n-type semiconductors. The p-type semiconductor exhibits a low breakdown voltage, while the n-type semiconductor has a high breakdown voltage.The working principle of the 1N6486 diodes can be understood by breaking it into three parts: Reverse Breakdown (RB), Avalanche Breakdown (AB), and Zener Breakdown (ZB).In Reverse Breakdown (RB), when the diode is forward-biased beyond its reverse break voltage, reverse current is developed. It\'s important to note that the Zener voltage decreases with increase in current, so a higher diode current results in a lower breakdown voltage.In Avalanche Breakdown (AB), when a positive voltage is applied to the diode, the carriers are accelerated by the electric field intensity. The accelerating carriers gain more energy and cause more carriers not to recombine. The more carriers that are not recombined, the more current that is passed and the higher the breakdown voltage becomes.Finally, in Zener Breakdown (ZB), the electron-hole pairs that are generated by the impact ionization of the lattice electrons cause the current to pass through the diode without interruption. This results in a constant breakdown voltage over a wide range of current.The 1N6486 diode has several beneficial electrical features that make it attractive for a wide range of applications. Firstly, it offers a high breakdown voltage, a low on-state voltage, and a high surge current rating. Secondly, the devices have a high temperature coefficient which helps maintain long-term stability. Finally, these diodes are highly reliable and offer low thermal resistance.
