1N6487 is a single Zener diode, which has a wide variety of application fields, in particular, testing, regulating and stabilizing voltage, preventing voltage surges, and protecting electronic equipment from overloads. The working principle of this diode is based on the Zener Breakdown effect.
The Zener Breakdown effect occurs when a high electric field, caused by a reverse bias voltage, is applied to the junction of a semiconductor. At some point, the critical electric field will cause electrons — particles having a negative charge — to break away from their atoms and move from the n-type material to the p-type material.
When the electric field causes the electrons to move from the n-type material to the p-type material, the barrier potential is suddenly decreased and the current increases significantly. The decrease in barrier potential constitutes what is known as the Zener Breakdown effect.
1N6487 uses a Zener Diode arrangement to control the voltage. When excess voltage is applied, it breaks down the barrier potential, known as the Avalanche Breakdown, which prevents further voltage increase or current flow. This is how the 1N6487 works as a voltage regulator or as a surge protector.
Another application of the 1N6487 is in the reverse-protection circuits. This is because it can provide a low-resistance path for a reverse current. Additionally, if the current is too large for the diode to handle, Zener diode can also act as a blow-out protector by “blowing up” to ensure that no further current passes through.
