Introduction

Working Principle

When a small current is applied in the forward direction (the base-emitter direction), via the base, it generates a larger current at the collector, in turn creating a voltage drop between collector and emitter. This is known as an active region of operation and results in two main operational modes: saturation and cut-off.

Saturation

When a sufficient current is applied to the base and a large enough load is placed on the transistor, the transistor enters a saturated state. As the base-emitter voltage corresponds to the base current, the collector voltage is near zero, as shown in Figure 1. This is known as saturation region and it is characterized by an increase in input current and an increase in collector current.

Cutoff

When a small current is applied to the base and a small load is placed on the transistor, the transistor enters a cutoff state, as shown in Figure 2. The collector-emitter voltage is near its maximum value, as the base current is insufficient to turn the transistor on fully. The voltage between base and emitter is near zero, since no current is flowing through the base-emitter junction. This is known as a cut-off region and it is characterized by a decrease in input current and a decrease in collector current.
