AO6405 is a N-Channel enhancement-mode Field Effect Transistor (FET) developed by Alpha & Omega semiconductors Inc. It is designed with a low-level threshold voltage rating, along with a breakdown voltage between 20V and 30V. This transistor is a monolithic integrated circuit providing individually controlled circuits for the gate, the source and the drain.

This transistor is mainly used to control applications that require low-level voltages, such as automotive devices, audio amplifiers, motor drivers, power supplies and other electronic devices. Additionally, its low-level threshold voltage rating helps to realize low power dissipation and low-power standby states.

AO6405 are typically used as switches, amplifiers, and voltage regulators, reaching speeds up to 25V/Arms.

Working Principle

AO6405 is operated by the principle of “suitability”. That is, the transistor is used to control a current without causing any changes in potentials or curves. As such, it is often used in circuits where current can’t be allowed to change, either due to safety concerns or in cases where there are systems with sensitive components.

When the Gate terminal is left open, the source terminal is turned off and no current is allowed to flow. However, when the Gate terminal is connected to a positive source, the field effect produces a current that flows from the source to the drain terminal.

The output current of the AO6405 increases as the gate length is reduced, since the resistance at the source is higher. The output current declines rapidly as the gate length is increased, since the resistance at the source is now lower.

In addition to providing an effective path for current, an advantage of the AO6405 is that it prevents thermal runaway and heat build-up which occur when scaling up power semiconductor devices. This is accomplished by dissipating gate charge which can accumulate when the device is in an active phase.
