The AUIRFS4310 (Advanced Unipolar-Mode Superjunction with Improved Ruggedness and Fast-Switching Performance) is an advanced power MOSFET family. It is an enhancement of the established and popular IRF Series of power field-effect transistors. It is an ideal choice for designers of power factor correction circuits, current-mode power supplies, AC/DC converters, soft-switched inverters, as well as synchronous rectification and other high current applications.

Application field

MOSFETs of this family are intended for use in applications such as power factor correction (PFC), as backup switches in DC-DC-converters and AC-DC-converters, synchronous rectification, and in converters for battery-charging applications wherever high efficiency and fast switching speed is required. They are also suitable for applications for motor control, H-bridge circuits, and audio amplifiers and switching regulators.

In certain applications, the AUIRFS4310 is used as a plug-in replacement for a bipolar transistor. In such applications, its advantages include high gain, fast switching, low on-state resistance, and low cost.

Working principle

The AUIRFS4310 is a monolithic power MOSFET integrated circuit. It is composed of a substrate (insulator) in which gate, drain and source terminals are embedded. The device works in the principle of a MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-effect Transistor). The AUIRFS4310 operates as a PFET (Enhancement Mode FET) in an analytical configuration to ensure very robust behavior under circuit overloads, during transients and in the presence of rapid load transients.

The gate of the device consists of an insulation layer between the gate terminal and the underlying drain and source terminals. The application of a positive potential to the gate terminal will induce a potential between the drain and source terminals, and thus an electric current is enabled to flow from the source to the drain terminal.

In a nutshell, a MOSFET works by controlling the flow of current between the source and drain terminals. It does this by changing the voltage applied to the gate terminal. When a voltage is applied to the gate terminal, electrons are able to move from the source to the drain terminal, enabling a current to flow. When no voltage is applied to the gate terminal, electrons cannot move from the source to the drain, preventing a current from flowing.

Unlike a bipolar transistor, a MOSFET is completely controllable, allowing the current to be controlled precisely. This makes it ideal for many applications, such as power supplies, voltage regulators, motor controls and audio amplifiers.

The AUIRFS4310 offers a high breakdown voltage, high-current handling capability, low on-state resistance, fast switching speed, excellent static and dynamic performance, and low conduction losses. It is well suited for high power applications, with outstanding performance at high switching frequencies.

The main benefit of the advanced unipolar-mode superjunction technology used in the AUIRFS4310 is the very low on-state losses and fast switching speed. This combination makes it an ideal choice for high efficiency power supplies, battery chargers and other applications where high power and low switching losses are critical.
