Thyristors - SCRs (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers) are bipolar semiconductor devices with three terminals, also known as controllable rectifiers or switches. Once this threshold voltage is reached, there is an ongoing anode current irrespective of the gate voltage level.
The operation of the SCR is managed by its gate terminal. To turn the SCR on, the current in the gate terminal must reach the gating peak voltage (Vg) or the SCR will remain off. As the gate current increases, so does the anode current; until it reaches the breakdown current Ibo. Once this threshold is exceeded, the SCR turns on and stays on until the anode current is dropped below the holding current Ih. Thus, the gate is used to control the anode current and achieve a desired effect. The gate can also be used as a protective measure, by keeping it off and allowing a current in the anode-cathode path to stay below Ibo.

Other applications include welding, rectification and commutation, turbocharging, and DC-to-DC converters.
