The Working Principle of Transistor, Photovoltaic Output Optoisolators
The Transistor, Photovoltaic Output optoisolator is a series of 6 pin optoisolators, each consisting of a gallium arsenide infrared-emitting diode (GaAIAs LED ), a phototransistor and an insulation barrier, packed in a plastic housing. The device operates on the principle of photoconductivity, where the optoisolator’s input signal (an electrical signal) is transmitted via the LED, which generates light, to the output signal (a phototransistor). The forward voltage of the LED must be 3V or above in order for it to work correctly.
The LED is forward biased with the input current, and emits light in proportion to the input current. The light strikes the junction of the phototransistor and causes current to flow in the phototransistor’s emitter. This current is amplified by the phototransistor’s collector, and the output of the phototransistor then drives the load. The phototransistor acts as an amplifier, with a gain of around 10 to 20.
The LED is reverse biased with a low voltage, typically 1.8V in the 5V supply type and 3.0V in the 12V supply type. Finally, the isolation barrier dimension is designed to provide electrical isolation between the input and output.
