The MRF148A is an enhancement mode N-Channel MOSFET designed for use in VHF and UHF radio frequency power amplifiers. Its low gate-source capacitance (Cgs) and low output capacitance (Coss) make it particularly well-suited for high frequency switching. It has excellent ESD protection and there is negligible switching loss and DC power adaptation, making it suitable for efficient power control and amplification applications.
In power amplifiers, a MOSFET is typically the last stage amplifier. The main purpose of the MOSFET is to boost signal power to the required power level for communication, for example for broadcasting and for wireless data transmission. The MOSFET amplifies signal power by increasing source current, which generally requires a large gate bias voltage for optimal operation. Different applications (such as high frequency switching, on-off gain control, efficiency improvements and High-Frequency Applications) must employ a MOSFET with desirable characteristics.
MRF148A is a N-Channel enhancement mode MOSFET. It is designed specifically for use in VHF and UHF radio frequency amplifiers and has the following characteristics: high voltage breakdown (BVDSS) of 160V, low gate-source capacitance (Cgs) of 1.9pF and low output capacitance (Coss) of 0.85pF. These characteristics make it suitable for use in high frequency operations such as high frequency switching and high frequency gain control.
On-off gain control is one of the key applications of MRF148A. This involves increasing the source current when it is required as when a signal needs a boost, and decreasing the source current when it is not required as when a signal needs to be dampened or when the output power needs to be limited.The MRF148A’s low Cgs and Coss enabled it to successfully operate at the required high frequencies necessary for effective gain control. The low Cgs and Coss minimize switching losses and minimize the distortion due to gate and source capacitance. Thus, MRF148A is able to accurately control the source current and the gain, leading to improved dynamic performance of the amplifier.
The MRF148A is also suitable for High-Frequency Applications. These applications are characterised by high frequency signals and are used in radio communications, and satellite and microwave communications. The MRF148A’s low Cgs and Coss enable it to accurately control the source current and the gain, leading to improved dynamic performance of the amplifier. The low gate-source capacitance and low output capacitance also minimize distortion due to gate and source capacitance, thus improving the accuracy and the performance of the amplifier.
